Corning product update - Falcon® centrifuge tubes

This notification concerns the temporary removal of blue colorant used in the manufacturing process of 15 and 50 mL Falcon® caps for Falcon® Centrifuge Tubes. Due to global raw material shortages, Corning are producing Falcon® caps without blue colorant resulting in a natural colored cap.

The natural cap has been validated through Corning's standard process and passed functional testing that was performed. There is no change to the tube itself, only the cap. There will be no change to the centrifuge tube materials, graduation marks, product artwork, or any other change that would impact the form, fit, and / or function of the product.

Additionally, the same in-process and post-process inspections will be performed for the cap. As this is only a change to the cap, product claims and product functionality remain unchanged. Implementation of Change: Effective Immediately Affected Products: 352096, 352196, 352095, 352099, 352097, 290020, 358206, 352098, 352070.

Lonza - Discontinuation of classical cell culture media products in Europe and Africa

During the past years more and more customer increased their consumption of high value cell type dedicated cell culture media for research use provided by Lonza under the Clonetics or Poietics brand. In addition, Lonza could see a trend to serum free chemically defined media for manufacturing purposes.

At the same time, usage of so-called “classical media and buffers” under the BioWhittaker brand declined steadily causing production of small batch sizes and discards for many of these products. As result of these trends, Lonza has decided to discontinue a broad range of “classical Media and buffers” labelled “For Research Use Only” (RUO). Several, but not all of these media will be available labelled “For Further Manufacturing” (FFM). In addition, they are offering custom manufacturing of media for formulations required by customers.

Jellagen - Lab Awards Winner - Most Impactful Sustainable Product Development

Ahead of the event, we pledged to plant a tree for every person that came to our stand, and this week we have fulfilled that promise, planting hundreds of trees in Kenya, in partnership with One Tree Planted.

We Are Celebrating Our Two Millionth Order

It doesn’t seem like long since we celebrated our millionth order, but it was back in November 2014! The first million orders took us 23 years to achieve from when we started in 1991.

SLS Matrigel Communication – October 2021

We are continuing to experience longer than usual lead times for key product lines, including Corning Matrigel. Due to unprecedented high demand and disruption to global supply chains, Corning remain in a rolling back-order situation and are therefore carefully managing all available stock and are currently not able to fulfil reservation requests.

We apologise for any inconvenience but hope our customers can understand that new processes have been temporarily put in place to try to ensure a fair distribution of Matrigel for all researchers whilst supply is affected. New batches of Matrigel are in production but due to the biological processes involved in manufacturing this product and unpredictable shipping timescales, we are currently unable to give accurate dates for delivery.

However, we estimate lead times for new orders placed now would be early 2022, but this is liable to change. Corning require a customer PO to be in the system before they can offer any form of prioritisation so please contact your local SLS Territory Sales Manager.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this period and we hope to be able to communicate that the situation is returning to normal soon.

Six brave members of the SLS team recently took on the challenge of abseiling down Derby Cathedral to raise money for Rainbows Hospice for children and young people.

Preena, Lisa, George, Maddie, Emma and Claire completed the challenge and raised over £1100 in the process!

SLS Lab Pro generators put laboratories in control of their gas and liquid nitrogen supplies

We have launched a new line of SLS Lab Pro gas and liquid nitrogen (LN2) generators, available exclusively in the UK and Ireland. This technology gives laboratories control over their gas and LN2 supplies, and promotes sustainability by eliminating the need for cross-country transportation of gas cannisters and Dewar flasks.  

On-site generation of gas and LN2 has gained popularity in recent years, as more companies have decided to free themselves from having to rely on external suppliers. This issue has been further highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, with deliveries all over the globe being significantly delayed. On-site production also offers users the possibility to create just the right amount of gas or LN2 for their application, which is beneficial for sustainability.  

The new SLS Lab Pro gas generators use the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technique to separate nitrogen, oxygen and water, producing high quality air and nitrogen gases for a wide range of applications. Gases are available at various flow rates, controlled through the latest HDMI touchscreen technology.

This also enables real-time monitoring of the gas production, ensuring that an efficient and consistent supply of gas is always available. The liquid nitrogen generator uses the same technique to create nitrogen gas that is subsequently liquified using a powerful cooling system, providing a steady and dependable supply of LN2.

Celebrate Earth Month with Cytiva

Today we take the time to honour the founder of Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS), Peter Chapman

After 30 years as founder and Managing Director, Peter has decided to “hang up his boots” with the intention of spending more quality time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his ‘other family’ - SLS. A family he brought together and who will miss him, his approach to management and his personality greatly – but probably not his dodgy jokes.  

Peter brought an informality to a formal working environment and was passionate that people should enjoy what they do. He cared for all his employees and always found time for face-to-face personal engagement, creating a feeling of camaraderie that came to be known as ‘SLSness’.  

Peter expected a strong and decisive work ethic from all in his employment and he was not one to procrastinate on decision making. His ethos to work was “Just ******* Do It!” Also retiring today is Peter’s worn-out exclamation key!!!!!!!!  

Despite retiring from his position at SLS, Peter still has a lot to keep him busy - with a portfolio of companies still under his stewardship including property and construction, software developers and a football agency.    

Peter will now get to spend more time at home with his wife Kristen and enjoy his five children, three grandchildren and the simple things in life. Family with a side of football and holidays all washed down with a large glass of Pinot Noir.   

All the best Peter and Thank you for everything - from everyone at SLS.

Comic Relief - Red Nose Day 2021 Walking Challenge

Did you know, SLS have an office in Nairobi? In support of Comic Relief - Red Nose Day 2021, we are aiming to walk the equivalent distance from Nottingham to Nairobi!  

As a team we will be submitting our steps weekly to achieve our goal.  

The distance from our Nottingham office to the office in Nairobi is 6490 miles, which is the equivalent of around 14,564,209 steps.
