Happy World Water Week!

This week we are observing World Water Week, an annual global event organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), which focuses on tackling the world’s most pressing water-related challenges. This event brings together experts, policymakers, innovators, and stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and develop solutions for sustainable water management, climate resilience, and the equitable distribution of water resources.

As a member of the UN Global Compact Network UK and a proud supporter of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this event holds great importance for SLS. It highlights the essential role of laboratories in water testing, environmental monitoring, and the development of sustainable practices within the scientific community.

Water Conservation in the Laboratory

Laboratories are notorious for their high resource consumption, using up to 5 times more water than commercial buildings. While some of this usage is necessary, there are always ways to improve efficiency. By implementing water-saving measures and optimising outdated processes and equipment, labs can significantly reduce their water consumption.

Our Water-Saving Story

Last year, SLS partnered with the University of Nottingham to enhance their water preservation practices. Our specialist team replaced 100 water aspirators with the SLS Lab Basics vacuum pumps, enabling the university to save over 9 million litres of water annually. A single water aspirator uses about 6-7 litres of water per minute, which can exceed 350 litres every hour when fully open. Unlike aspirators, the vacuum pumps supplied are dry-running devices, eliminating the need for water consumption and significantly reducing the organisation’s environmental impact.
