Trypan blue is a blue acid dye that contains two azo chromophores. It is a large, hydrophilic, tetrasulfonated anionic dye. It is also used to screen the cytotoxic properties of plant extracts. In addition, trypan blue is used for staining epiretinal membranes during vitrectomy surgery.
